Remove the background from animated GIFs

Drop a GIF and get a transparent animation back. Each frame is segmented on a CPU worker we run ourselves, so your file never leaves it.

How it works

  1. SplitRead every frame and its original delay, so the loop and timing stay intact.
  2. SegmentRun a segmentation model on each frame at up to 768px (u2netp in Fast mode, isnet in Best quality), then map the mask back to the original size.
  3. RebuildRe-encode a transparent GIF with one palette slot for alpha, and an animated WebP.

Limits

FramesUp to 60 per GIF
File sizeUp to 20 MB
ResolutionLongest edge up to 768px for inference
QueueOne GIF at a time on a 2 vCPU CPU worker. Longer clips are slower, not broken.
SpeedMeasured on a 2 vCPU ARM worker: ≈0.8 s/frame in Fast mode, ≈6 s/frame in Best quality.
TransparencyGIF has 1-bit alpha; soft edges are approximated. WebP keeps 8-bit alpha.

FAQ

Is the background removed on every frame?
Yes. The GIF is split into frames, each frame is segmented separately, and the frames are re-assembled with their original delays.
Why is my transparent GIF larger than the original?
Transparency needs an extra palette slot and often reduces how well neighbouring pixels compress. Trimming frames, lowering the longest edge, or exporting WebP usually shrinks the file.
GIF or WebP?
GIF is accepted almost everywhere. Animated WebP keeps 8-bit alpha, so soft edges survive and files are usually smaller, but some chat apps and office tools only animate GIF.
Fast or Best quality?
Fast uses u2netp at about 0.8 seconds per frame on our CPU worker. Best quality uses isnet, roughly seven times slower. On our test images 1-2% of edge pixels differed, so start with Fast and switch only if hair or fine details look wrong.
How long are files kept?
Both the upload and the results are deleted within 30 minutes after processing. No account is needed.
